Getting Your Home Ready for Autumn

Posted on 28th September 2022

The autumn season brings with it shorter days and cooler temperatures. This is the season of Halloween, Bonfire Night, pumpkin-spice flavoured coffee, Harvest Festival and more. In our homes, the beginning of autumn is the right time to transition from summer and make your living space feel cosy, comfortable and warm.

Here are some of our top tips to get your home ready for the autumn season.

Clear the Gutters

Blocked gutters and drains can become your worst nightmare, resulting in a leaky roof or worse yet, water damage to ceilings and walls. Make sure that the gutters are clean and ready for the rainy season. Clear out any debris including mud and leaves.

Have the Boiler Inspected

Oil and gas boilers must be serviced once every year. As autumn arrives, it’s the perfect time to get your boiler checked to ensure you are not caught out in the cold. You can reduce your energy bills by up to 35% by upgrading to an energy-efficient boiler.

Insulate Your Home

The best way to make your home cold-proof is to insulate your home. There are several ways to go about insulating your home and making it more energy-efficient. Consider investing in loft insulation, wall insulation and floor insulation.

Eliminate Draughts

An ill-fitting door can create a huge gap at the bottom between the floor and the door, a crack that can bring the cold outdoor air into your home. That can be easily blocked off using a draught excluder. Consider other gaps across the home that can bring in the cold air and fix them to draught-proof your home.

Add Rugs and Wall Hangings

Tapestries are not decorative but practical too. They can retain heat that might otherwise escape through walls. Similarly, rugs on your floor can retain warmth and stop heat loss through the soles of your feet when you walk on a cold floor.

Spices and Scents

Autumn is the perfect season for spices. Think pumpkin spice, apple spice, allspice, ginger spice, posh spice – anything with spice after it is perfect for autumn.

Nutmeg and cinnamon are also great for this season. Bake some treats using these spices like cinnamon hot cocoa or pumpkin spice coffee. You can also bring the scents of these spices with oil diffusers, candles, incense and potpourri.
