How to Save Money on Heating Bills

Posted on 26th March 2022

Gas prices are going up across the UK thanks to the hike in global energy prices. Several suppliers have gone out of business over the past few months and you are unlikely to get any more discount than the price cap.

Although there’s not much you can do about energy prices, there are some concrete steps you could take to save money on your heating bills. In this post, we share some of our top tips on saving on heating bills.

Insulate Your Home

Homes across the UK experience a surge in energy usage during the harsh winter months. That’s a no-brainer. But did you know that your home may be leaking a huge amount of heat?

Your roof could be leaking 25% of the heat. Insulating the loft can do the trick, so you won’t have to turn on the heater as frequently. This can help you save £130 annually. If your loft is already insulated, consider upgrading it to the recommended 270mm instead of the standard 120mm.

Here are some other things you could do:

  • Wall insulation
  • Insulate the pipes
  • Insulate the cavity walls
  • Draft proof the windows and doors
  • Install double glazing, or better yet, triple glazing

Use Energy Efficient Appliances

If you are looking to replace an appliance, you could reduce your energy bill by opting for the most energy-efficient variant. For instance, energy-efficient washing machines can help you save anywhere from £15 to £70 a year. Here’s how much you can save on energy-efficiency appliances:

  • Fridge freezer – £55
  • Built-in oven – £39
  • Washing machine – £55
  • Tumble dryer – £106
  • Dishwasher – £32

Look at an appliance’s EU energy-efficiency rating when shopping.

Turn Down Your Thermostat

This is the easiest and simplest way to reduce your energy bills. You can save up to 10% every year on your heating bills by turning down your thermostat by a few degrees.

Many homeowners tend to set the thermostat higher than necessary. Turning down the temperature by one degree can save you up to £75 per year.

Leverage the Sun’s Heat

You may see the sun far less during the winter months, but that does not mean you can’t make the most of it. You could use the sun’s rays to warm up your home during the day. If you have blinds, shades or curtains, open them up during the day to bring in the sunlight. Close the window treatments at night to create another layer of insulation.
